HUNTING TOOLS OF ORANG ASLI

Hunting is one of the activities of traditional Orang Asli. The main aim is to obtain food. Through evolution, they creatively invented various hunting devices or we call it as tools such as blowpipes, traps, arrows and spears. The devices are often used to hunt animals like mousedeer, deer, barking deer, wild bears, monkeys and birds. In addition, they are used as weapons to protect themselves from wild animal attacks during hunting process.

Their main hunting tool is the blowpipe. It is made from Shizostachyum jaculans which is a type of bamboo with long segments. The darts are usually made of bertam lath, with ipoh poison applied at the tip and the based fixed with balsa wood. A strong blow will send a dartas far as 20 to 40 yards. The technique of making the blowpipe varies according to sub-ethnic group, especially the carved mouthpiece. In addition, dart poison is obtained from the Ipoh tree sap.

The following pictures will give you a clear illustration of their hunting tools.
